A Brief History of First Aid through the Ages

The term “first aid” is now an accepted part of everyday language, and there is no doubt that it encompasses the help and assistance given to sick and injured people, but where did the term “first aid” originate and who were the original “first aiders”.
Prehistoric man, by necessity developed methods to treat the illnesses and injuries that befell him. It probably didn’t take long for them to realise in most cases that plugging an open wound would eventually stop bleeding, or by lashing a tree branch to a broken leg would allow the casualty to hobble around and would help healing.

A Little Knowledge Isn’t Dangerous

Living and working in the countryside is something that we take for granted, however, the remoteness which appeals to so many of us does have its draw backs in times of emergency. Have you ever stopped to think what would happen if you were injured whilst carrying out many of the tasks or pastimes which in rural areas are every day occurrences?, maybe operating machinery in a distant field, working in outbuilding or even just out walking the dogs in those out of the way places. We’ve all read about people with severe injuries getting themselves to a phone to summon help and after suitable treatment making a full recovery. It is just these occasions when a little knowledge of first aid can make a difference.

Modern day CPR was “invented” as recently as the 1950's and 60's……..

CPR and resuscitation are terms requiring no further explanation to readers, and due to TV, a large proportion of the general public will have a general idea what they mean even if they're not aware of the finer details and have never actually undertaken training.

Suspension Trauma

What is Suspension Trauma? It is a particular hazard for people who work in safety harnesses. Having fallen from height if a person is suspended in a safety harness for more than a couple of minutes they may suffer suspension trauma. It can result in unconsciousness, followed by death in less than 30 minutes

Treating someone with suspension trauma is not standard First Aid.

If you follow the normal advice for 'fainting' then you can easily kill your patient.

Jackie Southworth of SOVRIN Training takes a look at the Band-Aid

Although, the most frequently used piece of first aid equipment, by far the most readily available, the chances are you’ll never have read the instructions that come with it and its highly unlikely you’ll have been shown how to use it on a first aid course.

Jackie Southworth of SOVRIN Training, takes a look at the safety pin

In one form or another the safety pin has been around for over 3000 years and during that time the basic design has changed very little. Although their exact origin is uncertain it is known they were initially developed from the straight pin.

Jackie Southworth of SOVRIN Training looks at the provision of first aid training for child carers.

First aid training for people working with children commonly known as paediatric first aid is something of a grey area within the UK training industry. There is no regulatory authority in the way the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) monitors first aid for the workplace, and contrary to what some may believe, first aid training for child carers does not fall within the remit of the HSE.
